Dumpster Size Guide: Choosing 10, 20, 30 or 40 Yards

Start with debris type, not volume

Most people guess a size by imagining how much stuff they have. Start instead with what the debris is made of. Concrete, tile, soil and shingles hit weight limits long before they fill a container, so they belong in a 10 or 20 yard box. Furniture, drywall, packaging and yard waste are the opposite: bulky and light, better suited to 30 or 40 yards.

Real project benchmarks

A single-bathroom gut usually fits a 10 yard. A 200 square foot kitchen tear-out with cabinets and counters fills most of a 20 yard. A two-car garage packed to the rafters typically needs a 20 yard, sometimes 30 if there is patio furniture and lumber. A 1,500 square foot roof of architectural shingles is roughly a full 20 yard by weight, not volume.

Measure the space too

Before you book, check that the container will fit. A 20 yard needs about 22 feet of length plus roughly 10 feet of clearance behind for the truck to tilt and set it, and around 23 feet of vertical clearance during the drop. Low power lines and overhanging trees cause more delivery failures in South Florida than driveway size does.

When two smaller loads beat one large one

On tight lots, especially in Lake Worth Beach and downtown West Palm Beach, a 10 yard delivered twice can be cheaper and faster than paying a trip fee after a 30 yard cannot be placed. Ask us to compare both options before you commit.
